Tanning FAQs
What can I expect my first visit to Dilworth Tan?
The first time you come to Dilworth Tan, you will find a state-certified and experienced tanning operator on duty. You will need to fill out a questionnaire and may be asked additional questions about your specific tanning needs. This will allow us to give you a “Skin Type.” Your skin type tells us how well you tan and how easily you burn. From this information we will recommend the bed or beds that will fulfill your needs and give you the desired result in the time frame that you have to achieve your tan.
Do I need to make an appointment?
No. We do not accept appointments, so you can feel free to drop by whenever is most convenient for you during our service hours.
How old do you have to be to use a tanning bed?
North Carolina requires you to be at least 18 years or older to tan in a tanning bed. If you are under 18 years old, you may spray tan.
Do any of your tanning beds produce Only UVA or Only UVB?
No. ALL tanning beds emit both UVA and UVB rays. Both UVA and UVB rays are required to physically develop a tan. Different tanning equipment emits different percentages of each type of UV and consequently provide different results. Your individual skin type, time frame and/or any particular needs you have will determine which type of tanning beds or booths are appropriate for you.
Is it really important to wear eye protection when I tan?
Yes! UV light can damage the eyes if not protected properly and cause eye infections and permanent damage. Closing your eyes or covering your face with a towel does not protect them adequately. The State of North Carolina requires that you wear FDA approved eye protection every time you tan.
Do I need to start tanning on a level 1 or 2 tanning bed and work my way up to the higher beds?
No. You can start at any level that you like. The bed you choose to use should be based on your skin type and your personal tanning goals. One of our staff can recommend the appropriate type of tanning bed to meet your individual needs.
What is a base tan and should I get one before going on vacation?
A tan is your skin’s natural way of protecting itself from sunburn and overexposure. Getting a controlled tan in a tanning salon prior to vacations, events and the start of summer can help prevent your skin from ever burning. Burning causes the worst damage to your skin, so it should be avoided at all costs. It is ideal to give yourself 3-4 weeks to build a base tan.
What do tanning lotions do and why should I use one?
Tanning lotions provide many different benefits to your skin. First, indoor tanning lotions provide intense moisture, well moisturized skin will absorb more UV light and will tan better. Specially formulated indoor tanning lotions provide accelerating and maximizing ingredients to help stimulate the melanin (pigment) in your skin. Tanning lotions also provide nutrients, minerals and antioxidants. These ingredients replenish your skin to keep it healthy and glowing. Many of our higher quality lotions also contain firming and anti-aging or skin repairing ingredients.
Your skin is your body’s largest organ, it protects you! Using a salon quality indoor tanning lotion will protect it and keep it looking and feeling healthy!
Should I use a SPF sunscreen when tanning indoors?
No. The purpose of sunscreen is to allow you to stay in the sun longer than what is safe for your skin. In a tanning bed your exposure to UV is carefully controlled, therefore you do not need to use an SPF to prevent burning and doing so can prevent you from achieving the desired result.
I want to try a tanning lotion, how do I know which one to use?
There are many different indoor tanning lotions available. First, your tanning consultant will help you to determine what your needs are and can recommend a lotion that is appropriate for you. At Dilworth Tan, we carry a variety of different lotions from different brands. We choose each and every lotion carefully to provide you with only the very best to choose from. Our consultants at Dilworth Tan are not paid on commission; therefore you can rest assured that you will get the best recommendation for you…not just the highest priced lotion!
What is a “Cocktail Tan” and what is the benefit of doing one?
A Cocktail Tan is when you tan in a high level tanning bed and then do a VersaPro spray tan directly afterward. A Cocktail Tan is the fastest way to get the deepest, darkest tan! A session in a high level tanning bed will give most people some color even without a base tan. The heat from the tanning bed also opens up your pores, which allows the sunless spray tan to go deeper, last longer and appear more natural.
Do tanning packages expire?
Yes. All of our packages and specials must be used within the designated time frame. This is 6 months or 1 year for packages of visits. The specific time frame is listed on the pricing menu. Specials have individual expirations that are listed on the special ad/coupon. If you have any questions, feel free to ask one of our associates.
